Ah, France: The home of romance, the Eiffel Tower,
and French cuisine. Though the Eiffel
Tower isn't something
that can be carried over into the States, the same can't be said about the
romance and its cuisine. Cue Jean-Francois Poujol, owner of French
restaurant Soleil Bistro & Wine Bar, and his latest culinary
creation, Le Midi, which just opened on Houston Street. Poujol went native in
choosing his head chef, Nicolas Lebas, who has been cooking for 15 years and
was offered full creative control over the menu. Having grown up in Lyon, France,
he was inspired by the cuisine in which he was immersed his entire life,
creating a menu that is essentially his take on the classics. Before the
restaurant opened, Lebas added to his experience by training in South Beach,
Miami training under award-winning chef Jonathan
Wright (named one of Esquire’s Best New Chefs in America), telling us how much he
grew from that alone.
Le Midi, which translates
to both "midday” and a region in the South of France, embraces its culinary
heritage with its Provencal-inspired dishes and appearance. The menu is
complemented by the restaurant’s romantic setting; its location, down the street from the Majestic Theatre and in the hustle bustle of downtown, makes for
a great place to have a midday merienda with a lunch special such as the risotto or tuna nicoise salad, or with an
espresso accompanied by their molten chocolate cake. Le Midi is just as perfect come nighttime for a more intimate
evening destination with great conversation over their veal or bacon-wrapped
monkfish. Le Midi also offers specials on Majestic Theatre event nights
and a very reasonably priced happy hour. Taste what makes their take on French cuisine
so special by paying a visit to the restaurant at 301 E. Houston Street.

Authentic Italian cuisine has come to San Antonio via Il Sogno, which just opened
at the Pearl Brewery. The restaurant,
owned by Andrew Weissman (Le Rêve, Sandbar Fish House & Market), will offer
five-star food and service featuring the authentic Italian fare found in the
trattorias and osterias of Rome and Florence in a casual setting. Andrew Weissman, who has been nominated by
the coveted culinary James Beard award, says that, "We've worked very hard to
find the best foods and techniques from Italy. We want our guests to feel transported, both
by the menu and by the type of relaxed dining experience you"d find in European
café society. To help recreate the sense
of connection between people and food that you see in Italy, we’ve
worked on a design that showcases the food throughout the restaurant.”
The experience at Il Sogno, which means "The Dream" in Italian, begins at the restaurant entrance, where a
floor-to-ceiling pasta window will feature fresh pasta being rolled and cut on
one end of an open viewing kitchen for an experience “just short of eating inside
the kitchen,” Weissman said. Two massive display tables will allow diners to
view the extensive antipasta selection that will make up 20-30 percent of the
menu. Additional tables will display
fine cheeses and the day’s dessert offerings.
The restaurant will share the Pearl Brewery’s vision for environmental
sustainability, with plans to grow herbs for the kitchen in landscape planters
at the entrance and in the courtyard patio. Sounds like an Italian dream to us.

With the fact that some of the most beautiful models in the
world call Brazil
their home, it’s easy to forget that beauty is not all the country has to
offer. While odds are slim-to-none that San Antonio will ever be home to one of the Brazil’s
supermodels, it will be home to an award-winning Brazilian restaurant very
soon: Fogo de Chao, which serves up several South American meals. The culinary experience begins
with a gourmet salad and sides bar stocked with Brazilian side dishes, imported
cheeses, and vegetables (a few items, for example, include prosciutto, Italian salami, broccoli florets, marinated
artichoke hearts, and fresh mozzarella).
Upon return to your table, you turn up a green card to signal to a gaucho ("Brazilian Cowboy") chef that you’re ready to choose from one of the 15 cuts of meat that they’ll
bring to your table: grilled garlic-coated sirloin, charred pork ribs, bacon-wrapped filet mignon, parmesan-crusted pork
loin, seared and marinated bottom sirloin are but a few of the options. Flip the disc to
the red side when ready, and go back to green when you’re ready for more. Finish off the meal with their signature Papaya Cream dessert (with a touch of Creme de Cassis liquer) for the perfect way to finish up your unique, Brazilian dining experience.
The restaurant has won countless awards all
over the U.S.: Best Brazilian Restaurant, Best Steakhouse, Most Memorable Meal, even Wine
Spectator Magazine's Award of Excellence for its wine selection, eight years in a row. Who needs Brazilian models when you've got this Brazilian dining experience instead? Check out their website for a sneak
peek at their menu.
