VEGETABLE MALFUNCTION?
NBC may have deemed People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' steamy vegetable ads as too racy for TV, but that won't keep a couple of demonstrators from stripping down and showering in front of Alamo Plaza next week. The Feb. 4 protest will take place at 1 p.m. at 300 Alamo Plaza and involve two demonstrators showering, hoping to deliver the message that it takes six months’ worth of showers to produce one pound of meat. The campaign has already been used in other U.S. cities.

Meanwhile, if you want to see PETA’s racy Super Bowl ad campaign, which according to NBC "depicts a level of sexuality exceeding [its] standards," you’ll have to go online.  The ad features women in lingerie caressing broccoli spears, asparagus, and the message that "vegetarians have better sex” than their carnivorous counterparts. PETA is no stranger to risque publicity.  So far this year, female members of PETA have stripped to bikinis for chickens and placed their bare bodies on barbecue grills. SS
FREEDOM MARCH

As city of the largest Martin Luther King Day parade in the nation, San Antonio has a myriad of events planned for the month of January. The march started in 1986, when the rumble of a garbage truck paid homage to Martin Luther King, Jr.'s final protest for sanitation workers in 1968. The 3-mile course on the third Monday of January begins at Alamo City's Freedom Bridge and ends at Pittman-Sullivan Park. The event draws more than 100,000. VIA Rapid Transit offers rides to and from the event at their Crossroads and Randolph terminals, at 151 Crossroads Blvd. and 9400 I-35 North respectively.
The American Civil Liberties Union will host a ceremony from noon to 2 p.m. on Jan. 17 at MLK Academy, 3501 MLK Drive. Musical guests including the Sons of Thunder Gospel Choir, and speakers such as Al Bronsteon, Director Emeritus of the National Prison Project, will be featured. Bronstein was a lawyer for Martin Luther King, Jr., the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and the National Institute for Education in Law and Poverty. The free event is open to the public. SS
