THE LEGENDS OF BRAC
The City of San Antonio's Embrace BRAC campaign, now well under way, has signed on two of its most famous residents who have in common with BRAC not only a love for San Antonio, but a history in the military as well.  Spurs legend and NBA Hall of Famer David Robinson and Spurs Championship Coach Gregg Popovich will be the spokespersons for the Embrace BRAC public awareness program.

Families across the country will be moving to San Antonio as the military relocates all of its medical training facilities from around the country the city.  BRAC (which stands for Base Realignment and Closure) will bring to San Antonio plenty of business and job opportunities with its multi-billion dollar military base improvements.  Everyone behind the Embrace BRAC campaign hopes to educate the public about BRAC and the many benefits it will bring to the city.  "I'm very proud of my military training and service,” Robinson said.  “This BRAC project is a major boost for San Antonio’s economy and I was happy to help in the effort to raise awareness of the enormous military work happening in San Antonio, as well as welcoming the families that will be moving here.”  Once BRAC relocations are completed within the next couple of years, more than 150,000 Army, Navy and Air Force students will be attending enlisted and officer training programs at Randolph, Lackland and Fort Sam Houston annually.  Because the military is also reorganizing San Antonio’s military bases, the city will have the largest base operation within the Department of Defense, including a workforce of over 77,000 people.  Educating the city with information like this definitely sounds like something worth fighting for.  For more information on the San Antonio BRAC project, go to www.embracebrac.org

UPCOMING: OCTOBER 15+
Bienvenue, Le Midi!  The timing for a fabulous new French restaurant couldn't be better.  Jean-Francois Poujol, the owner of the delicious Soleil Bistro, will be having the Grand Opening for his newest restaurant, Le Midi, on October 18.  Taste the culinary pleasures of France by joining the festivities at the restaurant, located on 301 E. Houston Street, right in front of the Majestic Theater.

Dance to the beat of world-renowned DJ Tiesto, who will be spinning at Cowboys on October 24.  Keep the spirit of Cowboys and Texas alive by drinking a Lone Star!

Don't cry for us, Argentina: San Antonioans will get a chance to watch the musical Evita live, too.  It will be playing at the San Pedro Playhouse at 8 pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and at 2 pm on Sundays.  Call 733-7258 or visit sanpedroplayhouse.com for reservations or tickets.

Thanks to all of the locals who demanded the film Paranormal Activity via Eventful.com, we now have the opportunity to watch it.  If you happen to be going to one of the many theatres that won’t be offering purchases through Fandango, you should get there early: on opening night, they sold out almost two hours early.  For a movie playing on a weeknight at 12:01 am, that says a lot.  Warning: Sleeping that night be harder than it appears.  Don't say we didn't warn you.
The Doobie Brothers are still around and better than ever.  See why they’ve been around for three decades by checking them out at the Majestic Theatre on November 4 at 8 pm.  We recommend a visit to Le Midi, located across the street, after the show: Not only is the food delicious; it offers specials on event nights as well.

LEGENDS IN THE MAKING
Some of San Antonio's most legendary citizens of African descent will be celebrating their feats, growing larger and larger each year, with their third Annual Legends event. Since the founding of the San Antonio Chapter in 1996, The National Coalition of 100 Black Women has been consistently meeting their goals as they continue to address the issues that affect African-American women, such as equal rights and opportunities; awareness of black culture; the development of membership for effective leadership and participation in civic affairs; issues of National and International importance, and to full cooperation with other organizations to reach their goals as well.  Their ultimate goal is to make a positive difference in the lives of young African American females in the city.

The organization will be celebrating their 13th year anniversary with its Fourth Annual Community Legends Luncheon.  The event should be inspiring to all those attending and should leave them behind with a sense of renewed spirit and commitment. This year's legends include William Hadnott, M.D., for his efforts in Health; Clarice Golightly-Jenkins, PhD/RN/MSN/CNS/Retired USA Colonel, for her contributions to Health Education; Kurt B. Davis for his endeavors in Communications; Nettie Patricia Brooks Hinton for her Community Action/Political Leadership; Irene and Leo Edwards, Jr., MD for their dedications to The Arts; Florence Terrell for her achievements in Business; and Rose Michelle Johnson-Craig for her dedication to Education.  As powerful the non-profit organization's name sounds, with the legends that they are creating, National Coalition of 100 Black Women definitely sounds like an understatement.  Learn more about the coalition at their website.
ALL HALLOW'S EVE-NTS
Just as thematic as costumes, ghosts, and pumpkins to Halloween is the question of what will be going on that weekend.  Besides the ol' standby that is Trick-or-Treating, depending on the age group, there's a whole bunch of stuff going on for most age groups, from enjoying singing, dancing monsters at our theme parks, to costume contests that are somewhat out of the age vicinity of Dora the Explorer and more along the lines of something, well, less G-rated, to activities a little more out of the ordinary.  Below, a few of our favorites:

Ghost hunting: Whether you’re a cynic or a believer, there’s something fun about, for example, touring the old Alameda Theatre or paying a visit to Nightmare on Grayson Street.  If you’d like to be without the guidance of a highly trained professional, there’s always the story about the school bus that got hit by a train after it got stuck on railroad tracks.  According to the story, anyone who goes to the area and parks their cars on the railroad tracks will be pushed by the ghosts of the children to safety.  Talk about off-the-beaten-path.

Slab Cinema will be playing a 1922 silent classic vampire film.

You can never go wrong with a festival: for all things face-painting, music, and entertainment, you can try events such as the Corona Coffins on Parade on the River Walk, in which decorative coffins float down the river, accompanied by live music.

For the kiddos: Halloween festivals and entertainment galore.  One of the most promising seems to be the Circlefest, which will include characters from legends and folktales, music, cake, face painting, activities, and a pumpkin path.

And, of course, for all of the 21+ crowd, the list of bars and clubs holding costume contests is endless: Ultimately, it’s up to you to choose your favorite spot and take the Halloween-themed shots and join the costume contests there.
