JONAS ON THE RUN
When you typically think of the Jonas Brothers, you might think of three teenage boys running from rampant fans. That's a fair thought, but it in this instance, they are running for something much more important. The Special Olympics Texas has joined up with Jonas Brothers for a Change for the Children Foundation to create the iWin Joe Jonas Fun Run on August 13th, held at the historic Sunset Station, the venue for all of the festivities.

The event combines both organizations’ aims to raise money for kids facing adversity with intellectual disabilities here in Texas. Entry fees are $20 a person or $35 dollars for a child and parent entry. Along with the fun run, there are opportunities to win concert tickets to the Jonas Brothers’ concert later on that night, and even a chance to meet and run with Joe Jonas at the front of the race.  The morning will also be capped off with a concert from the up-and-coming band The Honor Society. If you’d like to work your heart out, in more ways than one, the iWin Joe Jonas Fun Run is a wonderful way to do it. You can find more details at sotx.org or at sunset-station.com
CATTLE BARON'S GALA
Get your spurs and heels ready: The American Cancer Society's 2009 Cattle Baron's Gala is almost here. This year's gala marks the 31st anniversary of the event. Each year, the American Cancer Society invites San Antonioans to have a good time while at the same time honoring and helping cancer patients and their families, including those who have lost their battle with cancer.  The nonprofit organization dedicates its time to eliminating and preventing cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service.

The event will be held at the Pearl Stables on Saturday, October 17, from 7:00 p.m. to midnight. There's a little something for everyone at this year's Cattle Baron's Gala, including two-stepping, live music, live and silent auctions, and Texas cuisine.  Tickets for this extravaganza start at $200. The Cattle Baron's Gala is one of the largest fundraisers for the San Antonio area American Cancer Society, and all money made will be used for patients in our community. Visit the website at cattlebaronsgala.org or call the American Cancer Society at 595-0219 for more information.

SALSA FEST
Sometimes it's difficult to wonder whether any given summer day in San Antonio could get any hotter. Well, here's a warning: one of the hotter days this city has to offer is coming up, although not hot in ways one might imagine.  Salsa Fest will be taking place at Hemisfair Park, with KC & the Sunshine Band playing at the end of the event.  (As for the temperatures, there’s not much to worry about: according to the weather forecasts, it’s actually the coolest day of the week.)

Local restaurants will be competing for the best salsa award, and there will be two categories: the People’s Choice (judged by event attendees) and the Overall Best Salsa (judged by a selected panel).  The event will offer free sampling to the audience between the hours of 4 to 6 p.m.  Some of the Salsa Fest participants include Sazos Latin Grill, Maddogs, Tomatillos, La Fogata, Aldacos, and Cachito de Mexico. In addition to live music, there will be a variety of food and merchandise vendors feeding the crowds.  Local groups Nef Solo Project and Bliss will be playing for audiences throughout the day, with KC and the Sunshine Band ending finishing off the spicy evening. With such delicious salsas to sample throughout the day, odds are that KC & the Sunshine Band will be playing "That’s the Way I Like It” by the end of their set.  Start planning your spicy Sunday by buying tickets ahead of time at www.sanantoniosalsafest.com.
BOW WOW
This summer, the San Antonio Botanical Garden will open its gates to dog lovers in the area with the fourth year of their popular, pet-friendly Dog Days of Summer weekend on August 1- 2. Visitors are invited to bring their dog (on a leash) for a visit to the Garden and an opportunity to learn more about their pets.  On Saturday from 8-11 a.m., special activities will be offered: dogs will available for adoption on-site, microchipping (which helps an owner track their pet should they become lost) will be available for pets, and a selection of pet products will be available for purchase.

Plastic pools of water will be located throughout the Garden for the animals to drink; "mutt mitts” will be provided for dog-owners to help pick up after their furry friends. The Carriage House Bistro, located inside the historic Carriage House at the Garden, will be open for brunch from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Although no pets are allowed inside the restaurant, there is outdoor seating for pet lovers to enjoy a meal. The event is co-sponsored by the Animal Defense League, San Antonio Animal Care Services, Humane Society/SPCA of Bexar County, and the San Antonio Botanical Society. A donation of $5.00 per dog will be collected and given as a contribution to these sponsors.  For a little bit of quality time with your four-legged friend, visit the Garden this weekend, which will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
