Do you ever feel like you are the only one who does
something a certain way? Do you ever feel alone in your experiences with UFOs
or your love of Jack Russell Terriers? Well, what luck for you, you may not be
so alone. So much of the internet is about connecting people who have similar
interests, thoughts and ideas, but they rarely leave the computer screen.
Meetup.com looks to take that extra step, outside of your house.
By the words
of their own manifesto, meetup.com asks its members to be fearless; they
understand the irreplaceable power of meeting people and getting together.
Humbly started in 2001 by three guys wanting to reinstate a sense of community
back into national landscape, the site now boasts nearly six million members
with nearly 60,000 groups that span across the entire world. In San Antonio
alone, there are over 300 groups that range a variety of topics from career
climbers, religious or non-religious folks, sports fanatics, politicos,
foodies, and everything else under the sun. Do yourself a favor and reach out
and touch someone, in real life. To refer to the site mantra, let's meet in
real time, in real places, and make a real difference, let's Meetup.

An opportunity to gamble and help society in one
way or another doesn't come around often.
However, San Antonio
will be providing that chance very soon: On September 12, the Second Annual
Tony and Eva Parker Celebrity Casino Night will be held at Pedrotti's North
Wind Ranch; all
proceeds benefit the Eva’s Heroes organization. Depending on the ticket
purchased, attendees can either get dinner and $1000 in casino chips ($125), or
dinner, a seat in the Texas Hold’Em Tournament (and an opportunity to play among the celebrities and other poker
players), and
$1000 in casino chips ($400). The winner will receive a seat to
the 2010 World Series of Poker in Las
Vegas, a $10,000 value. The tournament will be emceed
by 11-time World Series of Poker Champion, Phil Hellmuth. Sara Evans will be providing entertainment
with a performance during the dinner of the Casino Night.
Eva’s Heroes is dedicated to enriching the
lives of children and young adults with developmental challenges and to help
them integrate and flourish in society. Actress Eva Longoria-Parker and
Executive Director Christiane Perkins-Garcia founded the organization in 2006. "We try to be
creative in offering them recreational activities that will enrich their lives
and opportunities to interact with peers.
Also important is that it creates awareness of Eva’s Heroes and what we
do. The more people that are informed of it, the more families we reach that
are in need,” said Perkins-Garcia. That
seems like a safe bet in our book. For
more information on their programs or to purchase tickets for the event, visit
http://evasheroes.org.

How many more times will you think to yourself that you need to donate
that bag of unwanted clothes in the corner of your room to an
organization? If sentimental value for the clothing (or not enough time
or, let's face it, procrastination) seems to be standing between you and the
motivation needed to donate the clothes, maybe a tasty Mexican meal at Paloma
Blanca may serve as motivation to donate. Throughout July, The Family
Service Association is having their annual Khakis for Kids Uniform Drive. All you have to
do is pull your khaki pants, skirts, shorts and white collared shirts out of
the pile of clothes, take them to Paloma Blanca (as well as all Eyemasters,
Cowboy Cleaners, and Sterling Bank locations) and have yourself some good
enchiladas afterward.
Khakis for Kids helps families in need of new and gently used clothes
for children, most often for uniforms. "Here at Paloma Blanca,
family is very important to us and we want to help children in our
community,” says General Manager Nelly Mendoza Olsen. “We are
honored to be a part of such a wonderful project that provides school uniforms
to children who need them.” Families needing khakis for their kids
can call the United Way Help Line, 2-1-1 or visit www.family-service.org and
complete an application. For more information about the Khakis for Kids Uniform Drive
contact Family Service Association at 210.299.2411. The sentimental value
derived from giving away your clothes might take on a whole new meaning if you
decide to help.

The words "green toilet” may evoke thoughts of a toilet in
need of a wash or of someone getting creative with their choice of toilet
color. However, in this life, green has come to mean more than just a
color—it's a way of life, toilets included. The people at San
Antonio Water System (SAWS) recognize this and are doing what they can to
ensure that as many people as possible have green toilets and save our water
resources with their "Kick the Can” program. Technically water-saving
toilets, they save water (and money) by using less of it when they flush. SAWS
is giving them away for free with their new “Kick the Can”
campaign. Green living is quickly making its way through San Antonio thanks to
Build San Antonio Green (SAWS is one of their partners), which was developed by
the Metropolitan Partnership for Energy. In an effort to provide energy
leadership and a better quality of life for everyone, they work with the
building and development community to implement green building; they also
educate legislators, insurance groups, and any other interested parties about making
our lives a little greener. Visit their website at http://www.buildsagreen.org/rebates.html
for more info on helping save our water resources, one flush at a time.
