WILD CHILD

The San Antonio Zoo’s new magnificent mini-zoo is the perfect place for children under five to “Grow with Nature.”  Tiny explorers can dig, climb, get wet and dirty as they uncover and discover nature’s wonders at fun-filled Kronkosky’s Tiny Tot Nature Spot.

No two visits will be the same; each day is filled with a wide variety of activities: watch the lady bug release, dig up carrots to feed the guinea pigs, play on the riverbank or uncover worms. Through early immersion into nature, the Zoo encourages children to develop an understanding and an appreciation for nature.

The exhibit features a sloth, coati, squirrel monkeys, prairie dogs, flamingos, giant tortoises, frogs, fish and insects in interactive habitats.  Young children can touch animals, dress-up like zoo keepers, create a fish print, or just wander about in wonder.

FOCUS, FOCUS

People are aware that ADD is common in kids, but few realize that the disorder exists in adults as well.  Until the 1970s it was believed that that the condition existed only in children, and that they outgrew it in adolescence.  It is now known that adults can have ADD as well, but the symptoms, such as restlessness often go unrecognized.

Symptoms commonly associated with adult ADD can also include: Lack of focus, persistent pencil tapping or foot tapping, disorganization, difficulty finishing projects, and losing things.  If this sounds like you or someone you know, take this quiz to see if you might be affected by Adult ADD.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

Mission San Juan was originally founded in 1716 in the area of eastern Texas but was brought over in1731 to San Antonio which is its present location. Composed of stone, the church was completed in 1756 along with a friary and granary. The community that resided in San Juan is described as an independent community that was able to thrive on the resources around them. Indian artisans had the role of producing iron tools, cloth, and prepared hides. Food could be found through the vegetation and fruit sources that came from outside the mission confines. The farmers sustained the community by harvesting maize, beans, squash, and potatoes, among other foods in their fields. Another benefiting factor of Mission San Juan was Rancho de Pataguilla which held its own abundant supply of cattle and agriculture. Having such resources made Mission San Juan a benefit to all the settlements around it. Because the missions are so old, certain parts of the park have been made inaccessible. However there are plenty of other attractions that come along with the park such as viewing the historical film Gente de Razon, which depicts the native people of 18th-century south Texas and how they colonized New Spain. There is also a museum which contains artifacts that help portray the lives of the Indians. The park is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and can be found at 2202 Roosevelt Avenue.
