THE BUSINESS OF ROADRUNNERS
There’s never been a better time to be a part of the UTSA Business School.  In addition to its rapid growth (one of the 40 largest business schools in the nation after only 40 years) is a rapid accumulation of accolades in business magazines and reviews across the country.  In the September 2009 edition of Hispanic Business Magazine, the UTSA graduate business school ranked first in the nation for Hispanics, beating out (in order of ranking): UT-El Paso, University of Miami, UT-Austin, Stanford University, University of New Mexico, Dartmouth College, Florida International University, University of California at Berkeley and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  For being the youngest school on the list (in some cases by about 100 years), that’s saying quite a lot about it.

Some of the criteria considered by Hispanic Business magazine included commitment to diversity, percentage of full-time Hispanic faculty members, student support services, graduation rates and graduate program reputation.  Among other lists that the school has been on include ranking third in the Southwest and 26th in the nation by BusinessWeek; named one of the top 10 MBA programs for minority students by the Princeton Review for the past four years and being named a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Research by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security (only 23 schools in the country and one school in Texas have been recognized with this honor).  It is one of the 40 largest business schools in the nation with 5,800 enrolled students and 47 graduate and undergraduate business programs.  Pay a visit to their website for more information about the school and the awards and honors it’s received.

FOOD IN THE BANK
In support of September Hunger Action Month, a nationwide initiative to take action against hunger, the San Antonio Food Bank will help the cause with three different ways in an effort to entice the public to take action.

With their 30 Ways in 30 Days campaign. The Food Bank suggests—you guessed it—30 ways to "give a little of yourself, donate food, time, money and your voice to feed the hungry in our community.”  Suggestions are located on the Food Bank's website.

The Seaworld food drive offers a $15 discount for guests who bring in ten cans of food.  Adding a little novelty to the mix, Seaworld will then take the donated cans and create a large whale tail before giving them to the Food Bank to feed those in need.  The food drive will take place each weekend until the end of September.

CANstruction is an event showcasing the creations of competing teams led by San Antonio architects, designers, engineers and contractors.  They'll showcase their talents by designing and building structures made entirely out of canned goods.  These “CANstructures” will be on display and open for public viewing throughout North Star Mall from September 13-26. CANstructures will be judged and the winner will then compete at the national competition.  At the conclusion of the exhibit, all canned goods will be donated to the San Antonio Food Bank.  For information about events or the San Antonio Food Bank, visit the site or contact Monica Borrego, the Food & Fund Drive Coordinator at (210) 431-8310.

BBQ FOR A CAUSE
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Many strides have been made in the fight against Breast Cancer, including several local organizations here in San Antonio. Kathryn Brown started her own foundation, The Kathryn Brown Cancervive Foundation, after living through Ovarian cancer and dealing with several family members who have been diagnosed with Breast and Ovarian Cancer. It was her goal to prove that with a lot of support and a lot of fight, you can beat what may seem to be insurmountable odds. Her website, Ribbons of Awareness, was born out of these tough ideals, and is used as a platform for support and inspiration.

This month in particular is a busy one for Ribbons, as they are working on a huge event to promote awareness, The Breast Cancer Awareness Motorcycle Bash on October 29th. Coupled with Texas Pride Barbecue, the Bash is an event with great food, live music, and door prizes, all in aims to raise awareness of Breast Cancer. No, you don't have to have a motorcycle to participate in the fun, both riders and non-riders are welcome. You would be hard pressed to find someone that hasn't been touched by someone who has suffered this disease. Kathryn Brown Cancervive is doing something to help out. You can do something too. For more details on the event, visit The Kathryn Brown Cancervive Foundation’s website at ribbonsofawareness.org.
RIVERWALK WILD
If you take a trip to the River Walk and feel like something's a little different, it could have something to do with the 70-100 canoes you"ll notice splashing about in the river.  This Saturday will be the only day of the year in which you’ll see such an event, thanks to the Ford Canoe Challenge.  A mixture of boy scouts, girl scouts, corporate teams, and local celebrities (past participants include Mayor Julian Castro), will be participating in timed heats along the River Walk for an opportunity to conquer the waters of the San Antonio river.  No need to worry about life vests in the case of a "Man Overboard!” situation: Anyone who falls into the shallow river need only stand up and walk back into their boat.  Despite the river’s shallow waters, there are obstacles to look out for: Two of this year’s celebrities, the current Bud Light King Rex, Oscar Cepeda, and past king Curt Greer, both agree that one major factor is fish.

Most of the event’s participants have dedicated time to raise funds for the Paseo del Rio Association.  Kevin Jetton, a participant responsible for calculating the Challenge’s winners, said that the event, presented by the Tower Life Building, is a “…reasonably priced, safe, fun activity on the River Walk.”  The competition begins and ends at the Chamber of Commerce offices with the kickoff time 9:15 a.m., and should last for approximately two hours.  The entertaining event, which has been around for 41 years, should quench your thirst for some San Antonio river wild action for 364 days to come and, could quite possibly inspire you to hop into a canoe next year, too.
