BOTTOMS UP

People have long been aware that gulping brewskies will give you a beer belly, but are cocktails any better? The following article from Forbes magazine gives us the answer:

"After a night of drinking cocktails, most people will not only wake up the next morning with a screaming hangover, they'll wake up fatter too."

That's because the average serving of one ounce of 80-proof alcohol contains about 90 calories. And that's before mixers are added. While many people who spend hours on treadmills or yoga mats may smugly eschew dessert or ban butter from their diets, often they will happily consume a cocktail--or three--without giving it a second thought. But they do so at considerable peril to their waistlines. A Pina Colada, for example, has more calories than a Big Mac.” For more information, visit the following Web site.

BOOZE CLUES

What exactly is a manly drink?

In the following article, AskMen.com gives recipes for the perfect testosterone-friendly beverage, while laying down the cold hard fact that your mixed drink makes you look like a sissy.

“Let's get this out in the open right now. The drink you hold in your hand does define you as a person. Hey, it's a cruel world of first impressions and rushed judgments, guys; better get used to it. You may not be able to judge a book by its cover, but God knows people never stop trying.

Take that malt beverage bottle you're holding in your hand that's glowing brighter than a kitten in Chernobyl. Know what it's saying about you to every woman in the room? I'm a corporate shill who follows trends and can't think for himself, so I ordered this sugary crap.” Read more..

Following the 10:45 p.m. headliner performance on Saturday nights, is a free After Midnight Madness show at 12:30 a.m. though this is touted as the "adult show," you're less likely to hear a good dirty joke, and more likely to see local beginners stumbling through fledgling routines. POETRY ON STEROIDS

These bards aren't wimps. The Puroslam, hosted every Tuesday, features San Antonio"s most subversive poets battling it out on stage. Having been active for nearly a decade, the Puroslam is a notable wringer for up-and-coming poets. Audience participation is key. If you are good: hoots, hollers and cat calls. Not so good?

Expect to be booed, ignored and heckled with no mercy. These naysayers consider interrupting the performer an art form, and they are proud artisans of their craft. Referred to as Boot Camp for poets, Puroslam is the real deal, and the Puroslam team has represented San Antonio a countless number of times on the national level. Make sure to support your local poetry slam Tuesday Nights at The Heights on Broadway, 9315 Broadway, at 9:30pm. This isn’t your parents’ coffeehouse. You can learn more about them at www.puroslam.com or their MySpace at www.myspace.com/puroslam. MD
