ROSE-TINTED DATING
In a world full of gripes from the romance-deprived, such as "I had nothing in common with my blind date,” “Match.com didn't work out well,” “it's impossible to meet someone in San Antonio,” or “never plan a date with someone if you’re wearing beer goggles,” it’s easy to wonder how those happy couples walking down the street made it happen.  One possibility: speed dating, which will be taking place in San Antonio on July 11.

The speed dating process usually begins with people RSVP’ing until a sufficient number of people have signed up for the session.  After plenty of 3-8 minute “dates” with each person, everyone provides the name of anyone with whom they felt they had chemistry to one of the event organizers.  Two or three days later, everyone receives their results and learns whether the other person felt the same.  Speed dating has some interesting research to support its concept: one study shows that people make up their minds about a person within the first thirty seconds of meeting them; one other shows that conscious preferences usually give way to subconscious preferences; for example, although some people will check off “non-smoker” in their list of preferences, that preference is thrown out the window when they feel a click with a smoker.  Intrigued?  Sign up by calling 800-957-DASH to reserve your spot now.  Because one person’s beer goggles are another’s rose-tinted glasses.

DRINK AND BE NERDY

There are only three rules for the pub quiz captivating Alamo City's beer-soaked nerds: 1) don't Ef with the quizmaster; 2) don’t shout out the answers; and 3) the quiz is fixed. Geeks Who Drink wreaks havoc at Lion & Rose's Broadway and Sonterra locations. If you devour quiz shows, VH1 or Nick-at-Nite re-runs, this could be your bag. With questions ranging from pop culture to academia, the game’s format involves jotting answers to questions announced by an emcee, them submitting them for scoring.  Teams of up to six are assembled, and naming your crew is half the fun. Favorites include State-Funded Education, Zombie Cats and Em Effers.

The quiz contains eight rounds, including visual and audio rounds that require players to perform such feats as recognizing Matthew McConaughey solely from his derriere and calling out Weird Al covers. The game is free, but gift cards, complimentary beer and goofy novelty gifts hang in the balance … not to mention bragging rights. Ties are settled with paper, rock and scissors. Both quizzes kick off Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. For more information, check out www.geekswhodrink.com. SS
