December 7th, 1980 marked the end of one of Punk
Rock’s seminal bands. The Germs were one of the most wild, fun, and
surprisingly talented bands among the entire soundscape at the height of Punk.
Sadly on that fateful December day, Darby Crash, the lead singer and lyricist
of The Germs, overdosed at the very young age of 22, and his death went largely
unnoticed in the music scene as the next day would mark the assassination of
John Lennon. However, their legacy has lived on through their highly treasured
records, and they have been in key name and influence in the Punk scene for
decades. Pat Smear, lead guitarist for The Germs, went on to bigger fame in his
work with Nirvana and the Foo Fighters.
After decades had past since the band had seen each other,
they were invited to oversee a biopic made about The Germs, 2005’s What We Do
Is Secret. Darby Crash was portrayed by actor Shane West, known from such films
as A Walk to Remember, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and the television show
ER. The remaining members of the band were so impressed with his performance,
they decided to perform a one off concert with him, and the show went so well,
that they decided to add him to the band. They have performed all over the
country, including as a part of the Vans Warped Tour, and now San Antonio will
get a chance to see these electric punk legends. The Germs will take the stage
at the Rock Bottom Tattoo Bar on July 10th. You can find more info
on the show at their MySpace at www.myspace.com/rockbottomtattoobar.
