In 2007, the Wall-Street Journal conducted the sociological experiment to rival all sociological experiments. In a busy Washington DC metro station stood a lone man and his violin. With zero fanfare, he fiddled with Bach for nearly an hour, garnering the attention of a few hurried travelers … and a mesmerized 3-year-old. The man in the station was no other than Grammy Award-winning Joshua Bell on his $3.5 million violin, who USA Today calls the man who made classical music sexy and Boston Herald regards as the greatest American violinist alive today. At the end of the experiment, Bell garnered $32.
San Antonians have a chance to squeeze in a night of Bell's spine-tingling melodies at The Majestic on Jan. 31, where he will join pianist Jeremy Denk in a performance with the San Antonio Symphony. Tickets for the 8 p.m. show range from $10 to $60 and can be ordered at the Symphony Box Office at 210.554.1010, or through Ticketmaster at 210.266.9600. SS

It is hard to believe that the Alternative Rock superstars
in Coldplay have been around for nearly a decade. From their explosion onto the
music scene in 2000 with the song Yellow, they shot up to the top of the
charts, right into our stereos, and have never quite left. Four albums later, this
year has been a fantastic year for the band in particular, as they won 3 Grammy
awards for Song of the Year, Best Rock Album, and Best Pop Vocal Performance by
a Duo or Group all from Viva La Vida. Outside of their illustrious song
catalog, a lot of people are fans of Coldplay for the activism they display and
bring to the forefront of their music. Most notably, Chris Martin is an ardent
supporter of fair trade, most notably displayed whenever he performs, he always
wears something that says Make Trade Fair, in reference to Oxfam’s Make Trade
Fair. Also it has been widely known that the band donates 15% of all of their
earning to charity. These are a few of the many reasons that Coldplay has one
of the largest and most vigilant fanbases. If any of those fans are in San
Antonio, they are in luck. The British rockers will be here in the River City
on June 10 in the AT&T Center. For more ticket info visit

Imagine a combination of explosions, fireworks, and strobe
lights. Now imagine throwing Green Day and Franz Ferdinand, both recognized as two
of the best live acts around, in the mix.
That explosive combination will be in San Antonio on August 9, with Franz Ferdinand
opening for Green Day. Green Day, who
will be promoting their eighth-studio album, 21st Century Breakdown,
hasn’t toured since 2004’s two-time Grammy Award-winning punk-rock opera
American Idiot. Singer-guitarist Billie
Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tre Cool have been at work
writing, arranging, and recording 21st Century Breakdown since early
2006 with producer Butch Vig (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins).
Franz Ferdinand, who always pump up audiences with
their high-energy performances, are joining Green Day mid-tour, with San
Antonio being the second city to host this new lineup. Since Franz Ferdinand released their debut
album in 2004, they have at least 10 awards under their belt, including one for
Best Live Band [link]. Green Day, who
has been playing for almost 20 years, has won 27 of the 70 nominations they’ve
received; one such nomination was for Best International Live Act [link]. If the awards are any indicators, with these
two groups under one roof, there are going to be fireworks. Check out the high-octane performances by
getting your tickets at www.ticketmaster.com.
