HORRIFIC FILM FESTIVAL
What do you get when you put some of horror film's most notable and gruesome characters, in a room?  You get The Horrific Film Fest, which will be taking place in San Antonio from August 27-30 at the Alamo Drafthouse.  Jason (Friday the 13th), Michael Myers (Halloween), and Leatherface (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), otherwise known as Bill Johnson, Ari Lehman, and Tony Moran, respectively, will be in San Antonio with other experts in the film genre for some screams at the Horrific Fest. They will also offer guidance and advice to filmmakers from around the globe.

The Horrific Film Fest 2 kicks off with the Horrific Zombie Walk and Trailer party on Thursday, August 27th. Participants should wear their most gruesome attire, face paint included (the goal is to look like a scary zombie), for the Zombie Walk, followed by the Horrific Trailer Party, plus a concert by some horror rock bands. Ari Lehman (Michael Myers) will emcee. The weekend will include film screenings and seminars on special effects, acting (taught by Bill "Leatherface” Johnson), and sound editing, all done by respected members of the film industry.  There will also be a Black Carpet Celebrity Walk, Ghost Hunting by After Dark Paranormal Investigators, and an Awards Ceremony. The cost is $10 per day.  VIP passes are available—for $50, you have access to three days of the festival, including a photo with a celebrity of your choice. The only difficult part of the weekend will be deciding which actor you want in the photo!
CINEMA IN THE MOONLIGHT
The drive-in. One of the classic ways to curl up and enjoy a movie in the dark of night. Most drive-ins have come and gone, but that doesn't mean you can"t recreate the effect. The City of San Antonio feels the same way. Movies by Moonlight is a series put on by the city of San Antonio and local sponsors. A free service, movies are screened on Thursdays in the grassy area under the park archway and the Magik Theater building at S. Alamo and Nueva. The Month of August featured an 80s flashback theme including Pretty in Pink and Top Gun and September will be an ode to Classic Films such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Fiddler on the Roof.

You can bring picnic baskets, lawn chairs, and blankets, but if you forget to bring food, there is popcorn and cotton candy to be purchased as well. Movies by Moonlight is a wonderful opportunity to take your family or someone special out for an intimate night on the town for cheap. FOR THE LOVE OF ADAM
Adam is a film about a seemingly normal young man who lives a sheltered life. However, he deals with a silent fight that many people like him in real life deal with and it affects his everyday life. Adam is afflicted with Asperger Syndrome, a mild form of autism. His difficulty to communicate and monitor his own feelings often finds him in trouble. However, the story isn't about his struggle, but rather a tale of sweet love between Adam and a new tenant in his building, Beth. While finding it hard to express himself to her, they immediately connect, and try to do their best to harness the connection that they have. Hugh Dancy, perhaps best recognized from Confessions of a Shopaholic, studied for months to play the titular character of Adam properly and portray those affected by Asperger"s in the correct light. Already having made the rounds at the film festivals, including a win at Sundance, Fox Searchlight decided to pick up the film and distribute it in select theatres. You can find out where it is playing as well as show times at the official website, foxsearchlight.com/adam.
ATTACK OF THE REEFER ZOMBIES
As fabulous as our dear city is, it's not really known for being one of the country's film making hubs. However, a local filmmaker is quickly rising his way up the theatrical ranks thanks to the support of San Antonio. Bryan Ortiz.  Ortiz, who already has awards for Best Direction and Best Musical Score under his belt for "Last Chance,” his entry for the 48 Hour Film Project, will be screening his latest film, “Dr. 'S' Battles the Sex-Crazed Reefer Zombies,” later this month.  The movie takes place in a small, sleepy American town.  In an experiment gone terribly wrong, Dr. S and his team of scientists develop a strand of “reefer” for the military to use as a weapon, but then deem too unstable.  In an effort to create a more stable strain of the reefer, he tests some on himself, turning him into a stronger man with a rage nothing short of uncontrollable, which results in him killing his entire team.  The reefer gets out, turning residents into “Sex-Crazed Reefer Zombies.” He vows to make things right and find a cure, and in the process brings about a bloody, violent movie, both entertaining and clever. (For instance, the fitting name of the town's sweetheart?  Mary Jane, who joins Dr. S in saving the city and stopping the madness.)

Ortiz, a film student from the University of the Incarnate Word, was supported by the city and university, as well as Drew Mayer-Oakes, the city’s film commissioner, who Ortiz says was very supportive throughout the endeavor.  Watch the reefer madness when the movie screens at the Alamo Draftouse Theater on October 24 at 10:00.
