Wow! another New Year already! 2004 was remarkable for us, and
as 2005 begins, we've made a number of resolutions to keep our site
even more interesting. First and foremost, B1604 will remain a dedicated
provider of relevant and entertaining articles for st1:City> San
Antonio's community. Secondly, B1604 will
also continue to inform its subscribers about cultural events occurring
within and beyond the loop, and will be introducing a number of
improvements to help the site grow. As part of our restructuring
process, keep an eye out for additional categories such as: fashion,
metro, nightlife... and a more comprehensive navigational system.
o:p>
In addition to site
improvements, we have also changed internally.
We would like to welcome Jennifer Herrera as the
new B1604 Senior Editor. She will be responsible for editing
the majority of the information posted on the site, and will be
receiving the emails that you send our way.
This year promises
to be another period of tremendous growth for B1604, and we are
looking forward to improving and expanding our services to the
SA community at large. We
hope you had a safe and happy holiday, and we look forward to
hearing from you in the New Year!

There are some of us out there who love books, but never seem to have the time or money to take our sweet rear ends down to the bookstore. Luckily, driving is no longer necessary in order to travel Around the World in 80 Days or to crack The DaVinci Code. In this age of technology there is a virtual treasure trove for lit buffs and it's located about 12 inches north of that keyboard and mouse.
This mother lode is actually a network of countless sites that offer what are called e-books, which are complete literary works that are coded as html or PDF documents. The coding means that you can simply go to an e-books website, search for a specific genre, title, or author, and with a click of the mouse, download the entire book onto your computer for free. Yes, free. No strings attached. No money spent. No travel necessary.
These resources are mostly projects by public and university libraries, but there are also fan sites, for instance The Hardy Boys Fan Fiction site, that will hold a specific genre or series of books.
Now there are no excuses. Go stretch those brain muscles, even if you don't want to stretch your leg ones.

Last month's massive 9.0 earthquake and following tsunamis are some of the most devastating natural disasters in recent history. Spanning a distance of over 11 Asian countries, the tsunamis have killed 155,000 people, and the number is still rising as hopes diminish and the missing are assumed dead.
o:p>
It is now the world's responsibility to help prevent more casualties. So far governments around the globe have offered more than $2 billion in aid to the countries hit by the disaster, but the funds may not be enough. According to the World Health Organization, there are more than 500,000 people injured and in need of medical care across the Asian nations, and the cost of caring for these people is rising.
Though countries around the world have praised the enormous generosity that governments have already shown, they are quick to point out that the funds may not be sufficient to treat victims both short and long term. In order to gain additional funds, the affected countries are looking to agencies such as the Red Cross and UNICEF, who have been accepting private donations. Hopefully with the help of the world community and nonprofits such as these, the tsunami victims will get a chance to survive.
If you would like to make a donation to aid tsunami victims:
Customers of Sterling bank can make donations to a special account (091005760) that will go to the American Red Cross International Response Fund. Donations will be accepted through the end of January..
Special auctions and links for direct contributions can be found on Ebay, which is sponsoring a number of organizations including: Action Against Hunger and UNICEF.

Traditionally, the American perception of meditation has been infused with images of monks, Buddhism, and with exotic eastern locales. Though this image is romantic, meditation is a far more common practice than most people realize, and can not only be found in the mountains of st1:country-region> Tibet, but in the average American suburb.
o:p>
As one of the five principles of yoga, meditation is the practice of focusing the mind at one point in order to perceive the self. It helps to clear the mind, discover wisdom, improve concentration, and relieve stress.
Though some forms of meditation take extreme self-discipline, there are basic meditations , such as Yoni Mudra, that can be practiced by the novice.
Yoni Mudra is considered one of the easiest types of meditations to practice. The idea behind this method is to separate yourself from senses in order to retreat into yourself.
To do this, simply close your ears with your thumbs. Next, cover you eyes with your index fingers, then close your nostrils with your middle fingers and press your lips together with your remaining fingers. Release the middle fingers gently to inhale and exhale while you meditate.
Hopefully, this basic method will help you relieve stress and will set you on a path to inner peace.

I must admit, as an
st1:City>Austin import, there
is a special place in my heart for the Alamo Drafthouse. I've been
an adoring fan since my junior year of college, when I first downed
a bucket of beer while watching a lip-synching ninja master lay
the smack-down on an intergalactic robot. That, my friends, was
quality cinema.
Sure, it's not the
wine-sipping art house environment of the Bijou, but the Alamo Drafthouse
(often just called "The Drafthouse"), is a rowdy good time for San
Antonians who are looking for a quirky place that doesn't take itself
too seriously. For
something different from mainstream fare, stop by during Something
Weird Wednesdays, which showcase such classics as "Silent Night,
Deadly Night", a touching holiday story about a young Santa look-alike
who goes on murderous rampage. The movies may not be Oscar winners,
but after a few brewskies, they sure are entertaining.
In addition to Something
Weird Wednesdays, which are free, the Drafthouse also plays free
Cowboys and Spurs games (check the schedule for details), has a
"Baby Day"" every Tuesday for people with young kids, and features
all of the latest mainstream movies.
If you stop by to see
a movie, don't forget to look over their menu, which offers delicious
appetizers, lunch, and dinner, all of which are brought directly
to your table during your movie. All in all, the Alamo Drafthouse
is a one stop shop for food, drinking, and cinema enthusiasts who
are looking for a good time.

Comedian and actor George Carlin will bring his famously brusque brand of comedy to the Majestic Theatre, located at st1:Street>224 E. Houston Street in San Antonio, on Friday, January 14th, 2005 at 8:00 p.m. for one performance only!
Known for a style that is both devastatingly blunt and keenly insightful, Carlin has proven himself to be one of America's most dynamic comics. No medium has gone untouched during his nearly 50-year career. Over the years Carlin's frank thoughts have been voiced in radio, television, books and movies. Widely known for his infamous 1970s stand-up routine, "The Seven Words You Can't Use On Television," Carlin's comic tone has continued in a rebellious, largely anti-establishment vein.
To date, Carlin has released 14 solo albums, starred in 12 HBO specials, and appeared in 10 feature films, including The Prince of Tides (1991) and Jersey Girl (2004). With three books under his belt, including the recently released When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops, Carlin can also count "successful author" among his many roles. At 67, Carlin remains one of America's most relevant comic voices and an eager observer of its society, language and national character.
Tickets can be purchased on-line at Ticketmaster.com
Ticket prices are $35.00 and $40.00.

st1:City> San Antonio is a city famous for its Mexican heritage and boasts many choices for excellent and authentic Mexican food. However, among the masses of quesadilla, tamale, and margarita offerings, there is one restaurant that stands apart. o:p>
Aldaco's, located in the historic Sunset Station, has been a San Antonio staple for the past 15 years. The winner of the Best Margarita in town two years running, as well as the 2004 San Antonio Express - News Critics Choice Award for Best Dessert, Aldaco's takes its food very seriously. Well, as seriously as a person recently described as "a fiesta on heels or wheels", can make it.
Blanca Aldaco, founder of Aldaco's has gained a reputation as a bubbly, energetic woman, who is not only a brilliant cook, but a very popular host. If you are interested in meeting her, you can attend a class at Aldaco's called Tortilla 101 – Cooking With Blanca. Here, fans of the restaurant can learn what most other restaurants jealously guard – the secret to great food. Past classes have included instruction on making delicious enchiladas verdes, spicy tamales, and of course, the famous margarita.
More of a diner than a cook? Perhaps you'll be more interested in Aldaco's "Dinner Under the Stars", where a constellation of flavors will delight your palate every 3rd Saturday of the month starting in March. Here, diners are given the chance to explore a different region of Mexico with a 5 course dinner paired with famous handcrafted margaritas and sultry latin jazz.
Whether you're in the mood for a fiesta, a romantic date, or an afternoon lunch, Aldaco's offers plates and events for any fan of Mexican cuisine.
